Rich Lehl's surreal paintings incorporate people or objects in settings creating a subjective narrative. Imagery is influenced by actual and subconscious experiences often distorting in a way that asks questions about the human condition. Mystery, desire, and humor are just some of the elements included in this work.

These fictions -- simulations, odd nocturnal habits, and the not quite extraordinary, are nuanced with complete certainty. In one of Lehl's paintings, an invisible man stands alone, surrounded by stacked shipping containers. He wears work clothes under a safety vest and smokes. Even without a head or body the figure conveys pride while his shadow is distorted into a strange geometry by artificial light sources. Lehl paints the containers in eerie, fluorescent colors packing the composition with moody light. Seducing the viewer with a seamless painting technique, Lehl makes one second guess with his off-kilter scenarios.
